Do you want to spend more time outdoors?

 

 

Notice you’re spending a lot of time on your electronic Devices?

 

Do you reminisce about positive experiences with nature in your past or childhood?

Are you concerned that natural settings aren’t as easily or safely accessible for you?

 

Maybe you don’t feel as comfortable or safe gathering with others in indoor settings following Covid, but would still like to be with other thoughtful human beings in a more open and natural environment?

 

I answered yes to all of these questions as recently as the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Even as I loved being outdoors as a child and had hiked portions of the Appalachian trail in my youth and young adulthood, I was spending more time indoors on virtual calls (doing the work I loved nonetheless) but more and more disconnected from the natural world. It was then that I resolved to start taking small steps to begin to open once again to the benefits of the natural world.

Connecting with the natural world can be easier and closer than we think. And yet reaping the benefits (see below) can be enhanced by cultivating a certain disposition…a more “receiving nature.” Modern life has trained us to prioritize thinking and doing, but we all have this innate capacity to simply perceive and receive the benefits of the natural world, and life itself for the matter…both the life outside and within us. I invite you to experience, (touch, hear, smell, taste, and see) and soak-in for yourself the gifts that are freely available in the natural world thereby feeling more at ease, alive, and well in your daily life.

I’m a National Board Certified – Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) and Kripalu certified Mindful Outdoor Guide (K-MOG). I’ve been coaching, facilitating, and guiding individuals and groups and training others to do the same for the bulk of my professional life. I’ve worked independently as well as with Duke University Health System, the Veterans Health Administration, and the Whole Health Institute.

Benefits

Numerous scientific studies continue to validate the benefits of connecting with the natural world. From looking out our windows onto water or green space, to spending time outside in your backyard, to having more immersive experiences in forests, nature’s positive impacts on human health and well-being are many.

Spending time with and in nature can increase feelings of calm and wakefulness; ease symptoms of anxiety and depression; heighten concentration, gratitude, compassion, and creativity; lower our heart rate and blood pressure; and bolster our immune system and physical health.

Research continues to expand, from roughly 60 studies in 2005 to 1,000 plus today, finding nature has robust effects on people’s health and well-being.
